Residential or nursing care homes should be considered if your loved one is no longer able to continue living at home, even with additional support. Care home placements are expensive and funding them can be complicated. Read our guide for more information

Care at Home can be an effective way to support your loved one to continue living in their own home. Care packages can be extremely flexible and considerably cheaper than a residential care home. You could also get funding support from your local authority, subject to a needs assessment
Paying for Care
Paying for a care home placement can be expensive. Subject to means testing, you may be eligible for local authority help toward the cost of the care home placement, however, the funding is likely to be less than the cost of care so in any case you may need to top up the cost. Continuing Healthcare or Funded Nursing?
If you or your loved one has had a hospital admission or has a long term disability that requires care, you may be eligible for a funding package called continuing healthcare (CHC) or funded nursing. Often these packages of care involve your local authority as well as the NHS, as there might be a social care element. In all cases, a needs assessment will need to be carried out to assess what modifications are needed to help your loved one continue to live in their own home

Will I have to sell my house to fund my care home place?
If you own your own home and you are the sole occupant then it's possible you may need to release funds from the equity in the property. This could mean you sell the house or you could find an alternative method, such as an equity release scheme. If a partner, dependent or other family member is still living in the house, then it's unlikely to be considered as an asset. We would advise serious consideration of the various options and their implications.
What is the 12 week property disregard?
If you need to become a permanent care home resident, you may be entitled to 12 weeks free. This means that the council disregards the value of your property and pays for your care for 12 weeks so that you have time make a decision.
